One thing I love about watching soccer on TV is the complete lack of commercial breaks until half time. The great American game of football makes no such allowances and thus it takes much longer to watch. Did you know that the average college football game lasts 3 hours and 24 minutes and the average NFL game takes 3 hours and 12 minutes from start to finish?
Given the wide expanse of time people are likely to get hungry. Uber Eats wants to be there when they do with deals from Taco Bell, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, KFC, Little Caesars, Buffalo Wild Wings and more. The brand also wants to equate football with food.
The Uber Eats “Cheeseheads” commercial shown above features a hard cut that neatly silences the doubting Thomas who thinks he’d know if he was being used to promote cheesy pizza. Humor is often about timing and the commercial in question has perfect timing.
“Five out of 32 teams in the NFL are named after birds…that my friend is a scheme to move chicken wings,” says Matthew McConaughey. And there it is again, the hard edit. This time the doubting McCaffrey gets the special treatment.
Let’s look at one more spot from the brand’s “Football is for Food” campaign.
“Nobody’s using goal posts to make you hungry for fr…” Cut!
I’d like to believe that someone’s making a statement here. Perhaps this statement: When we don’t want to hear what people are saying, what do we do? We stop listening. Or to put it in Uber Eats’ terms, we go for the hard edit.
