Pro sports are back. Baseball, football, and basketball are all lining it up. Along with racing, golf, tennis, et al. Athletes need the competition, and fans need something to distract them from the daily ravages of the pandemic and consequent economic fallouts.
The teams and leagues also need TV revenue.
On June 4, the NBA’s Board of Governors approved a competitive format for the comeback of the 2019-20 season with 22 teams returning to play and a start date of July 30. Additionally, the NBA and Disney reached an agreement to have games played at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
Today the NBA launched the official commercial for the 2019-20 NBA Restart campaign, “Whole New Game,” featuring writer, producer, and actress, Issa Rae, who will bring the campaign to life for the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA Season.
“It’s a Whole New Game,” takes place in an empty arena with Rae reflecting on the profound changes the world has been through this year, reminding fans where we left off and building anticipation for the restart of the season. The spot also features highlights of some of the most exciting moments of the 2019-20 season prior to the hiatus.
“It’s a Whole New Game” will be translated in more than 10 languages including Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Mexico), and Thai.
#WholeNewGame will feature a series of four spots launching throughout the remainder of the season and will run across TV, digital and social platforms.
The eight teams who will not be making the trip are the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors.
Some of the teams left out of this season’s regular-season resumption in Orlando have proposed ideas for regional mini-summer leagues, training camps, and organized team activities.
