Is there anything more American than the hamburger? How about starting a company that makes hamburgers from plants, and taking the company public and the food industry by storm?
Beyond Meat Inc., the company created by vegan Ethan Brown in 2009, raised nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to grow its line of plant-based meats, with shares rocketing in their public debut earlier this month.
Proceeds of the deal will be used to expand current manufacturing facilities and open new ones, to finance research and development and to boost sales and marketing, according to the prospectus.
A Better Way to Feed Earth People
The company’s mission is to create The Future of Protein – delicious plant-based burgers, sausage, crumbles, and more all made directly from simple plant-based ingredients. By shifting from animal to plant-based meat, the company is creating one savory solution that solves four growing issues attributed to livestock production: human health, climate change, constraints on natural resources and animal welfare.
Beyond Meat’s burgers are now in 33,000 stores, restaurants, hotels, and university cafeterias today.
You can try the burger at Carl’s Jr.
Del Taco is also serving Beyond Meat’s plant-based “meat” in its tacos.
According to the fast feeder, even “meatheads” love the new twist on tacos.
I haven’t tried the Beyond Burger yet, but my local Whole Foods carries them.
Time to fire up the grill.
