Juanita Jean Ain’t Messin’

August 8, 2018 By David Burn

How many emails per day do you receive? How many of them request money from you?

If you’ve bothered to donate to a political campaign, or non-profit, you’re under constant pressure to give more. If you purchase a product or service online, it’s the same onslaught of emails that never end. To make matters worse, the creative found in these email pitches is piss poor.

With the bar so far beyond low, it doesn’t take much to stand out. So, imagine my surprise when I found the following pitch from the Democratic Party of Texas in my inbox:

The ask is also outstanding: Cough up some dough, David, to ensure that Democratic voters over the age of 65 can vote and do it without harassment.

The letter is signed by Susan Bankston, of Juanita Jean and the ladies at the Beauty Shop. In other words, it’s from a member of the audience, an influencer and political blogger from Fort Bend, Texas.

The Texas Observer calls Bankston’s writing, “a surreal blend of storytelling and left-wing political commentary from Fort Bend, one of the reddest counties in Texas.”
