Honest Abe To The Rescue

January 24, 2019 By David Burn

Are you planning a Super Bowl party? You won’t need a Benjamin or two to feed your friends, because this year, a stack of Lincolns gets the job done.

GSD&M’s new ad campaign for Pizza Hut—the agency’s first, after adding the account last year—relies on two of the foundational concepts in marketing: price and promotion.

In the spots, Honest Abe is a husband, father and friend who brings to life the variety of offerings that customers can get at Pizza Hut for “just a Lincoln each.”

There’s no big idea in play here, but the casting and acting is spot on. I also enjoy the line in the script, “Hangry…party of three.” It’s a sly retort for Abe’s know-it-all children to chew on.

In an effort to correct the gross gender imbalance found throughout the ad business, this new campaign was created in collaboration with JEAN (from Community Productions), a production trio with a female director.

Pizza Hut entered a mutual agreement with GSD&M to include a bid from a female director in every production possible as part of the commitment to Free the Bid.
