Effen Outdoor

Lewis Lazare is giving credit to Steffan Postaer’s place. Oh my. Is the world spinning on a new axis?

It done good. The corpse that was Euro RSCG/Chicago now is showing an award-winning streak. The agency was one of 18 Obie Award winners — and the only one from Chicago — at Tuesday night’s gala awards dinners at the Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. The Obies have been handed out annually by the Outdoor Advertising Association for the last 64 years to honor excellence in outdoor advertising.
Euro RSCG won for an execution with a bit of a racy streak for locally based Effen vodka. And why not be a bit bawdy? It’s only vodka, after all. The billboard plays off the fact the vodka is distilled no fewer than five times.
The best-of-show Obie went to TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles for a series of outdoor executions for Pedigree dog food that prominently featured puppies and dogs. Euro RSCG shouldn’t feel too bad, though, about missing out on the best-of-show nod. It’s a well-known truism in show biz — you can always expect to be upstaged by animals.

In related news, Chick-fil-A’s “Eat Mor Chikin®” Cows have been inducted into outdoor advertising’s hall of fame.

About David Burn

I wrote my first ad for a political candidate when I was 17 years old. She won her race and I felt the seductive power of advertising for the first time. Today—after working for seven agencies in five states—I am now head of brand strategy and creative direction at Bonehook in Portland, Oregon.
