Chicken Licken is a quick-serve restaurant in South Africa. I bring them to your attention today because their commercials are the kind of commercials I’d like to see more of.
Joe Public United in Bryanston is responsible for the funny, offbeat work. It’s not every brand that is ready to poke fun at our responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Chicken Licken is an irreverent brand that pulls it off.
I clicked over to the brand’s YouTube page and their plethora of creative approaches reminds me of GEICO.
Animated for Your Viewing Pleasure
Chicken Licken is also producing a series of animated funnies. Let’s watch one:
That was fun. Let’s do it again:
Out of Place and Out of Home in Kentucky, USA
There’s also this wonderful weirdness. The brand which does business thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the southern U.S. state of Kentucky introduced a new outdoor board there, and then made a video about it.

It’s not noted in the video, but I will note it here that Kentucky is the home of KFC. What is noted in the video is how some of the state’s residents respond to the idea of low-priced chicken. They WANT it.
But, they can’t have it unless they travel to South Africa.
When one man in the video finds out that Chicken Licken isn’t opening a store in KY, he says that’s just overly dumb.
I like the reply, but it’s not overly dumb from an advertising point-of-view. Seeing how badly the Kentuckians on camera want this meal is a good way to drive South Africans to the restaurant while simultaneously poking fun at Americans.
