Are Ronald Reagan-Republicans stunned by the rapid erosion of conservative values by a reality TV star POTUS? Their professional actor POTUS held ideas about immigration that would make today’s Democrats blush.
The ad above is playing on FOX NEWS today. The ad is the work of Becoming American initiative, which exists to counter the White House narrative on immigration and provide the conservative case for immigration and DACA reform.
“We are a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. One of the best ways to counter illegal immigration is through legal immigration reform,” argues the group, led by Linda Chavez, the highest-ranking woman in President Reagan’s White House.
In January, Chavez wrote this:
Because we are a self-governing people, Americans, more than citizens of nondemocratic nations, need characteristics consistent with the duties of self-governance. We need to be able to communicate with one another. We need to be self-reliant but also compassionate. We need to be tolerant of others who are different from us and to tolerate dissent from others whose opinions we do not share. And importantly, because we are a nation whose people are not defined by birth, blood or soil, we need to forge a common identity — something the Founders understood when they adopted the motto “e pluribus unum,” or “out of many, one.”
Out of many, one. This will always be the American way. Of course, it takes bravery, compassion and energy to find common ground and move the nation forward. It’s so much easier to complain about the other, to find fault in the other and to drive a splintered wedge into your own heart and hearts of others than it is to step up and demonstrate your own integrity and loyalty to something bigger than yourself.
