In 2014, Alfonso Cuarón became the first Mexican filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Director, when his work on ambitious sci-fi drama Gravity was recognized by the Academy. Since he went home with that trophy, his fellow countryman Alejandro G. Iñárritu has won twice, for Birdman and The Revenant. Then, Guillermo del Toro won an Oscar last year for The Shape of Water.
All told, the three friends, who regularly consult with one another, have taken home the Best Director Oscar in five of the last six years. Talk about a dream team. Mexican directors have Hollywood by the tail because their spellbinding stories have film lovers entranced.

In related news, during Sunday’s Oscars broadcast, Verizon debuted a new campaign from cross-cultural creative agency the community and McCann that celebrates the diversity of its customers.
The new campaign, “Real Good Reasons,” marks the launch of a new creative strategy focused on Verizon’s real-life users. Each spot highlights an individual customer explaining why he or she chose Verizon, underscoring how the wireless carrier helps them stay connected to loved ones. For example, Maria underscores how Verizon helps her stay close with her family in Mexico, while Susana and Randy discuss how Verizon helps him stay close with their family in his role as a first responder.
Two of the six ads ran in Spanish, marking the first time a brand has aired commercials in Spanish during the Oscars that without subtitles.
