For the past 40 or more years, “Liberal” has been a bad word in Texas. Senator John Cornyn still lives in that throwback era, although time is now catching up to him and his kind.
Let’s look at the last gasps of a desperate GOP, and the tired arguments they continue to rely on. Since Cornyn isn’t running against a name-brand Democrat, his team decided to place Wendy Davis, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren in the 30-second ad.
Will it be enough to enrage distracted constituents (who don’t expect the GOP to lose a statewide race) and get them to vote for Big John Cornyn?
This ad is worth writing about but it’s not worth viewing more than once.
Cornyn has plenty of money to fend off challengers. He headed into July with a war chest of more than $9 million, after raising $2.5 million the second quarter of the year.
Money can’t buy you love but it can buy better advertising.
Democrats Rising
Royce West, a state Senator from Dallas, is one of several Democrats currently running for Big John Cornyn’s seat.
MJ Hegar, an Air Force veteran from Round Rock; Amanda Edwards, a Houston City Council member; former Houston congressman Chris Bell; and Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, co-founder of the Workers Defense Project and founder of the progressive Latino youth group Jolt Texas, are also running for the Democratic nomination.
For his part, West was gracious about the attack ad. Of course, by choosing to make his attack ad about West, Cornyn hints that West is the presumptive Democratic front-runner, whether he is or not.
Thank you Senator Cornyn for the free advertisement that is full of misperceptions and representations. I look forward to debating you on the record. Senator you can contribute and volunteer for my campaign by going to https://t.co/i3V7ztTzZz

West in His Own Words
Royce West is an experienced politician. This is how he is introducing himself to voters.
I believe the man has stories to tell and that he’s a true public servant.
I know that his Democratic opponents will bring a higher level of creativity and storytelling firepower to this race.
A for Amanda
Houston City Council member and Harvard Law School graduate, Amanda Edwards, represents 2.3 million people. She also represents the future of the Democratic Party.
This race is about all the people who’ve ever been locked out, told they can’t, or to wait their turn because the status quo wasn’t ready for change. Join the team at https://t.co/CT7W1NJQvB. pic.twitter.com/XjQp09nsJg

Damn, that’s how you advertise. Now, I want to know much more about Edwards and how I can support her run.
Let it shine.
