To help develop new writers and broaden our coverage, Adpulp.com is now accepting pitches from high achieving undergrads, grad students, and recent graduates. If you study or studied journalism, advertising, or marketing and you want to work with a copywriter/creative director and the editor of this website, here’s your chance.
For what it’s worth, I was a college journalist. I was a reporter, then the assistant news editor, and news editor of The College Reporter at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I was also an English major with zero interest in advertising as a profession.
Fast forward three decades…I’ve now been in the ad business for 24 years, and I’ve been the head writer and the editor of Adpulp for 15 years.
New Takes and Paydays Needed
Today, I am intent on helping emerging voices in business journalism get published and get paid. It’s one of the things that I care most about because it’s hard to make a living as a writer or artist of any sort. Hard, but far from impossible.
There are always markets for what high-quality writers provide.
For practicing writers there is the literary market, the entertainment market, the journalism market, and the advertising market. When you work in advertising, all of the sister industries are part of the big picture. When you go to work for a brand, you will rely on the same narrative structures that novelists use, you will write dialogue like a screenwriter, and you will tell long-form brand-sponsored stories in print and broadcast, like a journalist.
What Emerging Copywriters Need Today
Once upon a time, emerging copywriters could put together a book of speculative ads that never ran and show it to the right creative director at the right time, and miraculously land a good job. The process today is somewhat different in that it’s mostly online, and now there’s a marketplace need for social media chops, plus long-form blog posts, video, and more.
To work in advertising today, more than ever, a writer needs range.
If you want to bring your critical thinking and storytelling skills together and educate or entertain our readership of ad agency creatives, media buyers, recruiters, account service pros, client-side marketers, producers, educators, students, plus other trade journalists, let me hear from you. My email is dburn@adpulp.com.
I want to know what your story idea is and why you’re uniquely prepared to write it.
Pitch Me
Right now, I am seeking pitches from writers who can find and shape a story, then provide rigorous reporting and analysis.
Is there an ad industry event in your city? Cover it.
Is there an agency exec or client to interview? Yes, there is. Getting people to go on the record can be a challenge, but not when they want to promote something or get their name or company’s name in the trades.
Help Develop New Talent Today
I am asking talented information workers to perform labor and turn information into news. Therefore, I must find a way to pay for these professional services.
Even a small payday is a payday, and for people who are being paid to write for the first time, the point is to get paid at all. Once you are published and consistently paid to write, you’re also able to look yourself in the mirror and say, “I am a writer.”
