British Columbia is off the hook. Few places in the world can rival its beauty. But how does that all translate in a tourism spot? Can you get the grandeur on film?
Director Sean Thonson gave it a go in this new spot for Destination British Columbia. Shot through Dare Digital in Vancouver, “The Wild Within” features the incredibly diverse topography of Canada’s westernmost province.
The work is set to break during the Canada Winter Games opening February 13th, part of a campaign marketing British Columbia domestically and internationally.
Thonson traveled via boat, helicopter and small plane to acquire enough footage for the commercial, hiking through remarkably diverse topography in a climate that was as varied as the landscape. He found the shoot somewhat arduous, wearing two hats as both director and cinematographer but covered the gamut during the shoot: “It’s such a large province that it became challenging logistically,” he explains. “Being so vast I shot additional footage during scouts to take advantage of good light and unique locations as the light never repeats itself, even if you find the time to return.”
“British Columbia is an awe inspiring province but we’ve seen directors turn that into vanilla,” says Dare President, ECD Richard Hadden. “It was an incredibly satisfying experience working with that kind of vision, with someone so personally invested in the image. He’s a dynamo at what he does.”
