South African Creatives Have Been Reading Pynchon

“a Nugget shoe polish can in which Slothrop now and then studies his blurry brass reflection” -Thomas Pynchon in Gravity’s Rainbow
I have a weakness for ads that boldly (and intelligently) display a product benefit. This ad for Nugget Shoe Polish from The Jupiter Drawing Room in Johannesburg is a classic example.
Thanks to Gari Cruze for the post.

About David Burn

Co-founder and editor of AdPulp. I wrote my first ad for a political candidate when I was 17 years old. She won her race and I felt the seductive power of advertising for the first time. I worked for seven agencies in five states before launching my own practice in 2009. Today, I am head of brand strategy and creative at Bonehook in Portland, Oregon.

  1. David, plese bro, dont encourage them, my SA advertising breathren already have supercharged egos, just lie and tell them they suuck and we could get out of this okay…!

  2. Rich…!,
Sorry. I normally don’t like to encourage the ad beasts. But it is refreshing to see literary allusion so prominently at work in an ad (if, indeed, that’s what we have here). Especially, Pynchon. That’s heavy lifting!

  3. Sheesh, I think you started a trend:
    Oy vey…!
